Diamond Resorts owns a network of 379 vacation destinations in 35 countries around the world and sells vacation ownership points. In June 2016, Apollo Global Management made a successful offer to purchase Diamond Resorts International. On January 18th 2018, the company underwent a brand refresh, updating its logo and officially dropped the “International” from its name, and became known as Diamond Resorts. In South Africa, there is in excess of 200 resorts and over 600,000 people who own timeshares. The industry has come under the spotlight and it has become apparent that consumers are not so happy.

There have been many allegations and complaints against the timeshare industry and the National Consumer Commission are now looking to kickstart a public inquiry. Two men who died when a fire tore through a luxury five star hotel on the shores of Loch Lomond have been named.

Simon Midgley and Richard Dyson, believed to be from London, were staying at Cameron House Hotel when the blaze broke out on Monday morning.

Police have not confirmed the identity of those who died, but relatives have paid tribute on social media.

The hotel’s director has praised the actions of the emergency services in preventing further tragedy.

A husband and wife from San Diego, USA, are suing Westgate Towers, an Orlando timeshare resort, claiming fraudulent practice.

Mr and Mrs Grider lodged a complaint on November 6th, claiming that the company breached its responsibilities of fair dealing and good faith.

The complaint states that on January 6th 2016, the couple attended a timeshare sales presentation. The couple were lured into a purchase by misrepresentations made by Westgate Resorts. As a result, they have suffered monetary losses, by way of the initial deposit, instalments and annual maintenance fees.

Consumer groups demand investigations into allegations of misleading timeshare sales tactics.

Consumer groups in Australia has made a broad move and are accusing the timeshare industry of trapping people in long term timeshare contracts using predatory sales tactics.

Choice is a consumer group based in Australia and they are urging the Australian Securities and Investments Commission to act and prosecute timeshare operators who break the law. They also want an investigation into the entire timeshare industry after receiving a remarkable number of complaints from customers who have been trapped in contracts that last up to 99 years.
