The trial of Francis Madden, Claire Garland, Keith Furneval and Jean Furneval begins with prosecutors claiming that the four fraudulently obtained hundreds of thousands of pounds from unsuspecting customers wishing to purchase holiday products, over a period of around five years.

The four were charged in July 2017 in connection with the alleged fraud. The trial by Jury is scheduled to last six weeks.

The raid followed public complaints from members of the public about automated calls promoting boiler and window replacement schemes.

Calls were even made to a Network Rail control centre near Fort William and as a result drivers and pedestrians were unable to check if it was safe to cross the rails at uncrewed crossings.

Ken MacDonald, Head of ICO Scotland said, “these calls have caused millions of people disruption, annoyance and distress, but not only this, those made to a control centre charged with public safety may have endangered lives”.

A Warwickshire businessman has become the first person to be prosecuted by Companies House, after he falsely set-up companies on the Government register. Kevin Brewer admitted giving false information to Companies House and to using the names of prominent figures from the City of Westminster.

Companies House is the United Kingdom’s register of companies and is an executive agency and trading fund of her Majesty’s Government. It falls under the remit of the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy and is also a member of the Public Data Group. The ICO fines company £350K for making 75 million automated marketing calls.

The company named as Mis-Sold Products UK LTD made calls over a four month period from November 2015 to March 2016.

146 complaints were made to the ICO from members of the public, some of whom were called on multiple events, whilst others were even called late at night.

The calls made promoting Payment Protection Insurance (PPI) did not have consent from the recipients which is illegal under current privacy laws.

Mis-Sold Products UK LTD will now be forced to pay the £350k fine.
